For the culmination of her EtM residency at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, choreographer Janessa Clark will present her newest solo I Shall Ride this Storm into the Ocean and offer an artist talk afterwards.

I Shall Ride this Storm into the Ocean is a solo work for one woman. Journeying deep into themes of feminism, identity, gender roles, agency, subjugation, and perseverance one dancer will enter into the ring embodying and articulating a banner for the new age. A companion piece to an earlier feminist solo called Future Becomes Past created in 2003, it creates a lens into the noise of government, state-sponsored oppression, the birth of the Nasty Women movement, the #metoo campaign, and the myriad inequalities/oppression being revealed throughout the country and around the globe. The work creates movement based on protest, agency, phenomenology, the suffrage movement, and iconic women from black and white films, moments in sports history, and war correspondence. This solo is the second live solo in a triptych of feminist solos which will all eventually be adapted into dance films.

Performed by Courtney Drasner

Music by Gustav Mahler, David Shane Smith, and Peaches

I Shall Ride this Storm into the Ocean was developed through a 2018-19 Choreographic Residency at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning in Queens, NY and a Summer 2018 Residency at THE CHURCH Residency of Mt. Vision, NY
