Announcing Our New EtM Ridgewood Bushwick Composer-in-Residence

David Johnston

We are thrilled to announce our second EtM Ridgewood Bushwick Composer-in-Residence.  Gelsey Bell has been selected for the residency with the RiseBoro Community Partnership (formerly Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council.) Gelsey will receive six months of free rehearsal and composition space plus a stipend of $2,500 and will present at least one public program for seniors living at the Plaza de los Ancionos.

Described by the New York Times as an “imaginative” “winning soprano” whose performance of her own music is “virtuosic” and “glorious noise,” Gelsey Bell is a singer, songwriter, and scholar. Her performance creations have been presented internationally and she has released multiple albums. She is a core member of thingNY, Varispeed, and the Chutneys. In 2017, she received a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award and was an artist-in-residence at Roulette in 2015/16. Recently she appeared on Broadway as Princess Mary in Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812. She has a PhD from NYU in Performance Studies.
