We’re totally excited about the American Composers Orchestra’s 2012-13 coLABoratory: Playing It UNsafe season. This yearlong series of collaborative feedback sessions, workshops and public readings is a one of a kind opportunity for composers – a “professional research and development lab to support the creation of cutting-edge new American orchestral music through no-holds-barred experimentation.”  To our delight, 2010 Composer-in-Residence Judith Sainte Croix and former panelist Du Yun were among the six chosen from a nation-wide search.

Judith will work on Vision V, the fifth of her series. Along with abstract digital images, she will incorporate the full orchestra with her Sonora Trio, which features indigenous instruments from the Americas, electric guitar and synthesizer.

Du Yun’s Slow Portraits will explore a “frozen phrase” based on a sound design she created for visual artist David Michalek. She plans to reinterpret her digital sound phrase via the orchestra, creating an elongated, multilayered sound palette.

Check out the upcoming free LAB Workshop series which will be held in various parts of the city, including the DiMenna Center and Flushing Town Hall. Don’t miss out!
