2012 Composer-in-Residence Theo Metz
An Alabama native, Theo Metz has toured the globe as a percussionist and composer. Gifted with a huge artistic range, Theo thrives on collaboration with musicians of all genres. He’s a member of Slow Six, a 5-piece band that merges classical music with rock and other influences, and Wires.Under.Tension., an experimental rock duo with multi-instrumentalist Christopher Tignor. He’s composed for the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, and premiered works for Brooklyn Rider, the North Jersey Symphony and Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Theo has collaborated with international artists, including renowned Chinese opera star Qian Yi and Carnatic vocalist and musician Dr. T.V.Gopalakrishnan.
Recently, Theo has been cultivating his electro-acoustic interests to broaden his sound world. He’s created a series of hand built electronics and microphones to use with his percussion instruments, blending live sampling into his compositions and performances. As evidenced by his recent visit to host organization Flushing Town Hall, Theo is eager to use make full use of Flushing Town Hall’s ample space and continue experimenting at full volume. A proud resident of Queens, Theo is dedicating his Con Edison Residency to this unique borough – composing a 45-minute musical portrayal of Queens. To reflect Queens’ cultural richness, Theo plans to incorporate local found objects, along with indigenous music and instruments.
