Ancient Voices with Kamala Sankaram
Have a craving to learn about the ancient polyphonic songs of Central Ukraine? Head on down to the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy on Saturday, March 3rd at 2pm. 2011 Con Edison Composer-in-Residence Kamala Sankaram will present an introduction to the vocal and ornamental techniques of this ancient art. Joined by musician and ethnomusicologist Dr. Maria Sonevytsky, Kamala will demonstrate the influence of these traditions in her compositional process. Audience members will also have an exciting sneak peak at her brand new opera.
If you haven’t already experienced Kamala’s unique and idiosyncratic music, check out her recent “steampunk murder-mystery chamber opera” “Miranda” which premiered in January at HERE. Baroque, Hindustani, Tango, and Hip-Hop are wonderfully infused in this aural treat.
