An Evening of Cultivation

David Johnston

Warming up! Nivedita ShivRaj at the veena, Tripp Dudley on percussion and Octavio Vazquez at the piano.

Despite yesterday evening’s chilly rain and winds, Exploring the Metropolis’ first cultivation event was a wonderful success as composers, friends, funders, Board and Musicians’ Advisory Group members gathered together for a fantastic night of music and conversation. Hosted by our gracious Board member (and chashama founder) Anita Durst at her beautiful home, the event was like an intimate 18th century salon, where folks gathered to hear fabulous musical performances by composers-in-residence Nivedita ShivRaj and Octavio Vazquez and treat each other to enlightened conversation.

Founder and Director Eugenie Cowan, along with Associate Director David Johnston, began the evening by providing a short review of Exploring the Metropolis’ 29-year history and the Con Edison Musicians’ Residency: Composition Program. In attendance were all of the 2011-2012 Composers-in-Residence, as well as several from previous years. Also present were Board members Judd Greenstein, Saul Shapiro and Kimberly Mangold, Musicians’ Advisory Group member Gayle Morgan, and panelists Alexandra Honigsberg and Kevin James. We hope everyone had a ball, made some new friends and went home inspired and excited. Folks are already asking us to do this again … so stay tuned!
