Ultimate Battle of the Boroughs

David Johnston

You’ve probably already heard this, but Nivedita Shivraj and her band Charanams took the Ultimate Battle of the Boroughs at the WNYC Greene Space last Friday. Nivedita – who was a 2009 Con Edison Composer in Residence at Flushing Town Hall – is a favorite of ours around here, with her carnatic melodies wrapped around jazz lines. Charanams was the only Indian music band in a field of over 500 bands from across the five boroughs. As a prize, they’ll be playing at Summerstage Queens soon and again at WNYC’s Greene Space.

You can watch their winning performance below.

Congratulations to Nivedita and the rest of the group!
